A collaboration between Rodro Books & Education and Brentwood High School for the PAC PEACE Project.

This book project stands as a testament to the transformative power of literature, artistic expression, and student voice. It is a curated collection of self‑portraits accompanied by QR‑code audio narrations, created by Mrs. Dina Grisales’ 11th‑grade Home Language Arts students at Brentwood High School, in partnership with Paul Rodriguez from Rodro Books and Education as part of PAC’s PEACE Project. Within this initiative, students immersed themselves in the creative work of telling their own stories—narratives shaped by identity, resilience, and the quiet courage of self‑revelation. Through the dual acts of crafting their portraits and giving voice to their experiences, they cultivated essential skills in communication, reflection, and emotional literacy. More importantly, they discovered the profound agency that emerges when one becomes the author of one’s own narrative.

This project took place in a caring and nurturing space where students felt comfortable to affirm their desire to learn, to grow, and to transform the ways they and their community are perceived. Their work reflects a deep commitment not only to personal development, but also to expanding the cultural and artistic landscape in which their voices live.

Throughout this journey, students engaged in an in-depth process of meaningful artistic exploration—with voice, narrative structure, and visual composition—while nurturing empathy, confidence, and emotional awareness. What unfolds in these pages is more than a collection of student work; it is a celebration of collaboration, cultural pride, and the enduring power of the arts to shape not only the stories we tell, but the storytellers we become.
